Captain Kirk on Dancing with the Stars

Saturday, March 24th, 2007

Captain James Tiberius Kirk of television’s Star Trek is an American icon. The Captain, whose courage is legendary, will boldly go where no man has gone before. And so he does is this mashup.

Here, Kirk, played by William Shatner, will hit the dance floor, bust out some moves and risk the scorn of the judges.

The judges in question are Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Bruno Tonioli of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. Their comments, whether praise or criticism, are often as entertaining as the show’s dance numbers.

Leave it to Vader

Sunday, March 18th, 2007

Darth Vader of the George Lucas’s Star Wars series is one of the best-known villains in film history. He is ranked third on the American Film Institute’s 100 Heroes and Villains list.

Vader had long ago given himself over to the Dark Side, and he is truly evil. Unlike his disappointing son, Theodore, who in this mashup, seems to be mired in goodness and light.

Theodore Vader bears an uncanny resemblance to Theodore Cleaver, of TV’s Leave it to Beaver. Ward, June, Wally and Theodore (”the Beaver”) have come to represent the idealized family of mid 20th-century suburban America. Leave It to Beaver reruns remain a fixture on cable TV.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Auditions for American Idol

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

American Idol is a television phenomenon. It has described itself as “the best platform for new talent in television history” - and this is no groundless boast, given its consistenly through the roof ratings. Season Five, for example, was the number one television show of the year on Nielsen Ratings, as was Season 4 and Season 3.

Simon Cowell, among the American Idol judges, is by far the most harsh in his criticism of the show’s young hopefuls. In this mashup, Mr. Cowell disses the wrong contestant when Buffy the Vampire Slayer auditions for American Idol.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, created by Joss Whedon, was a highly successful TV series which ran from 1997 to 2003. It enjoyed a cult following. Buffy was played by Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Star Trek Meets South Park’s Brown Noise

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

The Star Ship Enterprise made its first appearance in 1966 in Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek. It has been redesigned, refitted and reincarnated in a variety of subsequent movies and TV series. The Starship Enterprise is almost certainly the most well known space vessel in science fiction.

In this mash up, things get messy when the Enterprise is caught in a time warp, flung to 21st century earth, and buffeted by South Park’s deadly Brown Noise, “a certain pitch that causes people to lose bowel control”.

South Park, of course, is an award winning, animated TV comedy series. It is in its 12th season. South Park is known for its satire and its willingness to take on any issue. Some have called it “the most philosophical show in TV history.”
